The following Table collects data on individuals who can be shown to have been present in southwest Virginia during the period from First Settlement in 1769, to the Eve of the Revolution in 1775. This is a work in progress. When completed, the links provided (in blue) will take you either to an article about the individual named (left hand column) or to a copy of the source information showing their presence in the area (top row). - ↑ In theory, this table collects names of settlers in Southwest Virginia during the period from First Settlement in 1769, to the Eve of the Revolution in 1775. In practice, I've not been overly strict about the the time frame. The data from the Washington County Surveyor records includes some individuals who acquired land in the area as late as the 1780's; these records are included mostly because we have a very specific date of settlement for these individuals. In addition, it seems likely that some of the individuals in the surveyor records did not actually reside in Southwest Virginia, but simply acquired land there as part of their business dealings.
- ↑ We have attempted to provide a single entry for each person. The spelling of some names is variable, and sometimes the same person appears under different spellings in different records. Where we are VERY certain that certain records pertain to the same individual, despite spelling variations, we have combined those records. For example, there is no question that "Stephen Cawood" and "Stephen Kaywood are a variant spellings of "Stephen Keywood". Sometimes different people are known by the same name. For example there are two unrelated "John Duncan's" in the records. One of these preferred the "Dunkin" spelling of his name, but the usage is not consistent. We have attempted to sort this out as best we can, but the reader is advised to use caution in interpreting which records belong to which person. Some entries, (e.g., Timothy DeMountbruan), are included here because they were associated with the Long Hunters, or Boone's Wilderness Road Crew, and may not have spent much, if any, time in Southwest Virginia.
