NOTE: There is a second place named Whittle (near Alnwick) in the county of Northumberland. It is further north and east than Whittle (near Hexham).

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Whittle (near Hexham) from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"WHITTLE, a township in Ovingham parish, Northumberland; 11 miles W of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Acres: 276. Population: 32. Houses: 5."

Whittle (near Hexham) was a township in the ancient parish of Ovingham and became a separate civil parish in 1866. From 1894 it was part of Hexham Rural District. In 1955 the civil parish was abolished and the area was absorbed into the parish of Horsley (near Wylam).
