History

Spartanburg County was originally called Spartan County and was named for the Spartan Regiment, a local militia unit that fought in the Revolutionary War. Learn more about the history of Spartanburg County from the South Carolina State Library or from Carolana.com.

  • 1755 - Scots-Irish settlers from Pennsylvania and Virginia begin to move into the area
  • 1785 - Thirty-three counties were created within existing South Carolina Districts. Spartan County was created within Ninety-Six District.
  • 1791 - Spartan County was renamed Spartanburg County in honor of the district/county seat (the city of Spartanburg) at the request of the citizens and Spartanburg County became part of Pinckney District.
  • 1800 - Spartanburg was re-christened a district and Ninety-Six District was abolished.
  • 1868 - Spartanburg and all other districts became counties.
  • 1897 - part of Spartanburg County became Cherokee County.

Spartanburg County is a county located on the northwestern border of the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 327,997, making it the fifth-most populous county in South Carolina. Its county seat is Spartanburg.

Spartanburg County is coterminous with the Spartanburg, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson, SC Combined Statistical Area.
