A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Shilvington from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"SHILVINGTON, a township in Morpeth parish, Northumberland; 4½ miles SW by S of Morpeth. Acres: 1,497. Population: 94. Houses: 14.

Shilvington was a township in the ancient parish of Morpeth and became a separate civil parish in 1866. From 1894 it was part of Castle Ward Rural District. In 1955 the civil parish was abolished and the area was absorbed into the parish of Whalton.
