The Okehampton Rural District was comprised of 27 civil parishes in the west of Devon, south of Holsworthy Rural District and north of the Plymouth area. It was in existence from 1894 until 1974. It replaced the earlier Okehampton Rural Sanitary District which catered for the area's needs during the latter part of the 19th century. In 1974 the area covered by the rural district became part of the current West Devon District which also serves the town of Okehampton, and the area covered by the former Tavistock Rural District.
