A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Newchurch from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"NEWCHURCH, a village and a parish in Chepstow [registration] district, Monmouth[shire]. The village stands near the source of Poolmerick brook, 4¾ miles S E by E of Llandenny [railway] station, and 5¾ N W by W of Chepstow. The parish is cut into two divisions, E and W; and comprises 5,434 acres. Post-town: Chepstow. Real property of the E division: £2,212. Population: 561. Houses: 114. Real property of the W division: £1,064. Population: 168. Houses: 36. The property is divided among a few. The living is a [perpetual] curacy in the diocese of Llandaff. Value: £166. Patron: the Duke of Beaufort. The church was reported in 1859 as very bad. There are a chapel of ease at Devandean, and charities £8."

Newchurch ceased to be a parish in 1881 when its two divisions became the two separate parishes of Newchurch East and Newchurch West. In 1894 they both were placed in Chepstow Rural District.

When Monmouthshire was abolished and replaced by Gwent in 1974, Newchurch East and Newchurch West were also abolished and the community established to cover the entire area was named Newchurch.
