History

The origin of the county's name is unknown. Many German immigrants settled in the Dutch Fork Area during the eighteenth century. Other settlers included English/Welsh and Scots-Irish. Learn more about the history of Newberry County from the [South Carolina State Library or from Carolana.com.

  • 1785 - Thirty-three counties were created within existing South Carolina Districts. Newberry County was created within Ninety-Six District.

1800 - Newberry was re-christened a district and Ninety-Six District was abolished. 1868 - Newberry and all other districts became counties.
