Mayfield Rural District was formed in 1894 from the Staffordshire portion of Ashbourne Rural Sanitary District which had its headquarters in Derbyshire. When it was abolished in 1934 the member parishes became parts of three different rural districts: Cheadle, Leek, and Uttoxeter.

The four parishes of Croxden, Blore, Mayfield, and Waterfall became the civil parish of Calton in 1866, and, in 1934, Calton became part of the newly-formed civil parish of Waterhouses which is now to be found in Staffordshire Moorlands unitary district.
