Llangwm is now a small rural parish and village in Monmouthshire, Wales. The village is located 3 miles (4.8 km) east of Usk, on the B4235 Chepstow to Usk road. Prior to 1935 it was in the parish of Llangwm Uchaf ("Upper Llangwm"), with a smaller and more dispersed settlement about 1 mile (1.6 km) to the northeast in the parish of Llangwm Isaf or ("Lower Llangwm").

Llangwm Uchaf and Llangwm Isaf were separate civil parishes 1894-1935. In 1935, in a move to reduce the number of parishes within Chepstow Rural District, Llangwm Uchaf and Llangwm Isaf were absorbed into the civil parish of Llangwm along with the parish of Llansoy which was north of Llangwm Isaf. In 1974 the whole of Llangwm parish was transferred to the new county of Gwent.

For more information, see the EN Wikipedia article Llangwm.. Notes about the churches in both villages and a mid-15th century house in Llangwm Uchaf named Allt-y-Bela which is a Grade II* listed building.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Llangwm from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"LLANGWM, a parish in Chepstow [registration] district, Monmouth[shire] ; on an affluent of the river Usk, 3½ miles E of Usk [railway] station. It is cut into two divisions, Icha and Ucha; and its Post town is Usk, under Newport, Monmouth[shire]. Acres: 3,159. Real property of [Llangwm] Icha: £731; of [Llangwm] Ucha: £2,309. Population of [Llangwm] Icha, 57; of [Llangwm] Ucha, 328. Houses: 9 and 62. The property of [Llangwm] Icha is divided among a few; and that of [Llangwm] Ucha is much subdivided. A small monastery, a cell to Lira abbey in Normandy, was founded in the parish in 1183. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Llandaff. Value: £83. * Patron: the Bishop of Llandaff. The church is dedicated to St. Hierom [Jerome]; is early decorated English; comprises fine nave and chancel, with a handsome tower on the chancel N side; presents features of unusual interest; was restored in 1860; and contains an elaborately carved rood-loft and screen. The parish has a share in Usk endowed school."
