Asperen was a loan and later private property until 1795 consisting of a small town and fort on the river LINGE and a rural part. In 1820 the rural part was made part of the municipality of Herwijnen in the province Gelderland, while the town remained in the province Zuid-Holland. In 1986 the town part was also assigned to Gelderland, merging with Herwijnen and Vuren into the new municipality Lingewaal.
