Albury is a village and civil parish in the Guildford District or Borough of Surrey, about 4 miles (6.4 km) south-east of Guildford town centre. Farley Green, Little London and the adjacent hamlet of Brook (Albury) form part of the secular parish. (There is another hamlet named Brook (Witley) in the parish of Witley in the Waverley District of Surrey.) The population of the parish, according to the census of 2011, was 1,191.

Albury "new village" is at the point where the Sherborne flowing from near Newlands Corner via the Silent Pool joins the Tillingbourne that runs through the centre of the village. Until the 20th century the stream fed the flour mill at the Chilworth end of the village.

Albury village is next to the Albury Estate which is an estate of 150 acres (0.61 km2). Within it is the Saxon church, a II-star listed building. The Duke of Northumberland owns the estate – the Mansion was once home to the Duke and Duchess. The gardens are designated Grade I listed and were designed by author and gardener John Evelyn who was noted for own his mansion 6 miles (9.7 km) east in Wotton, Surrey.

Maps

  • The National Library of Scotland has a website which provides maps taken from the Ordnance Survey England & Wales One-Inch to the Mile series of 1892-1908 as well as equivalent maps for Scotland itself. The immediate presentation is a "help" screen and a place selection screen prompting the entry of a location down to town, village or parish level. These screens can be removed by a click of the "X". The map is very clear and shows parish and county boundaries and many large buildings and estates that existed at the turn of the 20th century. Magnification can be adjusted and an "overlay feature" allows inspection of the area today along with that of 1900. The specific map from the series can be viewed as a whole ("View this map") and this allows the inspection of the map legend (found in the left hand bottom corner. Becoming familiar with the various facilities of these maps is well worth the trouble.
