Abergavenny Rural District was a rural district in the north of the county of Monmouthshire, Wales. It was created in 1894. It was named after and administered from Abergavenny which was made into an urban district.

In 1935 the rural district underwent a major reorganization. Most parishes disappeared and were replaced by new parishes comprising groups of the former ones. These new parishes all ended with the Welsh word "Fawr" which means great. The table below lists the parishes in groups under the new parishes.

In 1974, under the Local Government Act of 1972, rural districts ceased to exist as did the historical county of Monmouthshire. The area covered by Abergavenny Rural District was transferred to the administrative county of Gwent.

County border problems

Monmouthshire's (and thus Abergavenny Rural District's) boundaries with Herefordshire to the northeast and Breconshire or Brecknockshire to the north were not well-defined prior to the formation of the rural district. The parish of Welsh Bicknor, was an exclave of Monmouthshire, sandwiched between Gloucestershire and Herefordshire. The area was considered part of Monmouthshire until it was made part of Herefordshire "for all purposes" by the Counties (Detached Parts) Act 1844, while the Herefordshire hamlet of Fwthog (or Ffwddog) adjoining the Honddu Valley remained an exclave within Monmouthshire until 1891.
