Person talk:Samuel Jackson (59)

Thoughts about page construction [20 June 2016]

Hi Janie - First of all, I would like to complement you on your thorough research job of this Samuel Jackson. It is a lot to take in, and you have done a good job of sourcing your facts in the main text. The page could stay as is, but if I understood your request, you are looking for some ideas on presentation and management of multiple deeds/transcripts/wills for such a page - is that right? Just want to make sure that I am on the right tract. --cos1776 12:36, 20 June 2016 (UTC)

I spent today putting together a page for Samuel using a different style just to demonstrate a different method of constructing a page using more citations and less main body text. I am in no way suggesting that this is a better way, it is simply a different way that I often use when I have a lot of records spanning across time and place (and shifting counties) in order to keep everything straight. Since we are ultimately creating a database, I think it is important to use the data boxes provided to create citations and to include the actual text in each citation whenever possible, so that readers can actually see what it is that is being analyzed. Sometimes it is not clear if the passage being discussed is the actual passage or an interpretation or abstract of the passage. I added some records to the page that were not there before and left out the Mill and DNA sections (just for time's sake).

I also think it is really important to separate researcher comments with square brackets and to identify who is making the comments. Otherwise it is next to impossible to see who is saying what without going back through the whole page history and examining the differences between each edit.

Regarding whether or not you should create WR Transcripts of all of the related Deeds and Land Grants - Of course you could, but I don't think you have to do that for most of these Land Grants, especially when we are able to link directly to the images at the Univ. of VA Library. I do create a lot of Templates & Transcripts of Abstracts when I want to be able to post the same Abstract on multiple pages and make sure that it is always the same everywhere. I could see you doing that here for something like the 1788 Deed which should be posted on multiple pages. That way both the cited text and any associated analysis will always stay together.

In working on this today, I couldn't help but notice that you have created a lot of WR articles about these Jacksons over the years, many quoting most of the same records but with different analyses or notes.

(maybe more?)

My goodness... :) - how do you keep it all straight? It seem like most of this could be consolidated and posted to the appropriate Person pages, so that you don't have to worry about what has been updated where. I look forward to hearing your comments. Best Wishes. --cos1776 02:34, 21 June 2016 (UTC)
