Confirming Patience’s daughters’ families by tracing and testing mitochondrial DNA [15 April 2018]

  • Project stakeholders (are welcome to add signatures here):
  • UPDATE: One daughter line of Elizabeth Miller Roblin Canniff is reporting mtDNA K1a3a April 2018
  • UPDATE: Two daughter lines of Nancy Miller Clapp, Branch D, are reporting mtDNA K1a3a Feb 2018
  • UPDATE: One branch is reporting mtDNA haplotype K1a3a Oct 2017
  • UPDATE: Another potential daughter branch of Mary Catherine Miller Garrison has been identified (Mary, b 1791, married James Losee). However, additional documentation referring to William Garrison's wife as "Catherine" apparently independent of the original marriage record, has also been located. This introduces a notable inconsistency in the identification of Mary Catherine as a daughter of Patience. A new sub project is needed to help with clarification of relationships between two possible daughters of William Garrison and their mother as a daughter of Patience. Dec 2017

INTRODUCTION [12 July 2018]

Patience had four daughters surviving to adulthood: Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, and Ann/Nancy. There is evidence they all married at least once. In fact, there are multiple claims for spouses and descendants for all but Elizabeth, who married Philip Roblin (d 1788) and then John Canniff. Not all of these claims can be accurate. Validating which claims are true could really help untangle the 18th century Miller families from Smith’s Clove.

Fortunately, Elizabeth’s relationship to both her mother and father and her husband is well documented in her husband Philip Roblin’s 1788 statement to the Loyalist Commission, which refers specifically to his wife’s inheritance of property from her father, Garret Miller of Smith’s Clove, NY and which included a certificate signed by Elihu Marvin (patriot captain responsible for land confiscation who survived the war and remained in the Clove).

Additionally, Elizabeth had many well-documented daughters and there is an abundance of people living today who are carrying Elizabeth’s – and hence Patience’s – mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). These are the daughters of her daughters of her daughters, etc. – people related to Elizabeth through an entirely female line. Living mtDNA carriers are about 8-9 generations down from Patience, but mtDNA passes unchanged from women to their children over generational distances much, much, larger than that. For example, a nephew 16 times removed of Richard III and a niece 18 times removed – with 32 generations between them -- had only one base which was different across the 16 thousand bases of their mitochondrial DNA when they were both full sequence tested in 2014.

The only other solid information connecting Patience to a specific son-in-law is found in her second husband, George Fowler’s, will. George leaves a bequest to Garret Garrison, grandson of his wife Patience. This almost certainly indicates that the wife of William Garrison, who lived in Smith’s Clove until about 1794 and then moved to Canada, was one of Patience’s daughters.

The 5 Feb 1784 marriage of William Garrison to “Catherine Miller” was recorded by the Rev. Silas Constant in his diary. Three sons were born to William and his wife (including Garret) in Smith’s Clove before 1790. Constant had trouble remembering names before writing them in his diary (as a pastor riding a broad circuit through wilderness, he was likely travelling and then recording entries only when time allowed). “Catherine” may have been Mary (who was perhaps “Mary Catherine”, choosing to adopt her middle name later in life, as sometimes happened), but is unlikely to have been Sarah as she almost certainly married John Burgis/Burgess in 1778.

While it is not certain, it seems very possible that Nancy Garrison, born in Fredericksburg, Ontario in 1795, is a daughter of William Garrison and his Miller wife and fortunately, she also has living descendants who have inherited her mtDNA. If Nancy is Patience’s granddaughter through either her daughter Mary or Ann, her mtDNA inheriting descendants should have the same haplotype as living mtDNA inheriting descendants of Elizabeth and if full sequence tests were conducted, the results should be identical.

If Elizabeth’s mtDNA haplotype can be robustly confirmed (call it the “Branch A” type), ideally by tracing and determining the mtDNA haplotype of at least two of her mtDNA inheriting descendants from separate daughter branches, it can form a baseline of comparison for validating the existing claims to be a daughter branch of Garret and Patience Miller:

  • B. Sarah Miller married to John Burgess, settled Champaign, Ohio
  • C. Mary/Catherine Miller married William Garrison, settled Bay of Quinte, Ontario (their son Garret Garrison is probably the one mentioned as the grandson of Patience in George Fowler’s will but they are not named) – she now has two unproved daughters
  • D. Nancy/Ann Miller married Joseph Clapp, settled Bay of Quinte, Ontario (Joseph Clapp is referred to as “brother in law to the Widow Roblin [presumably Elizabeth]” in Playter’s History of Methodism in Canada)
  • E. Ann Miller married John Carpenter, settled Virginia (an Ann Carpenter is the sister of Mary Miller and provided an affidavit for her application to obtain her husband Peter’s Revolutionary War Pension)
  • F. Mary Miller married Peter Miller, settled Virginia. Peter is Garret’s nephew and is believed to have married his cousin, but which cousin is not clear

Project Objectives

  1. Down-trace descendants inheriting mtDNA from each of the women claimed to be a daughter of Garret and Patience
  2. Ascertain if any of those mtDNA carriers have tested their DNA and reported their mtDNA haplogroup online
    1. Branch A is K1a3a via one daughter branch (April 2018)
    2. Branch B reported to be:
    3. Branch C.1 (Mary Garrison Losee) reported to be:
    4. Branch C.2 (Nancy Garrison Badgeley) reported to be:
    5. Branch D is K1a3a via testers of two daughter branches (Feb 2018)
    6. Branch E reported to be:
    7. Branch F reported to be:
  3. Ascertain if any of have completed mtDNA haplotype testing with any available testing service, and/or the best test mtDNA full sequence testing with FamilyTreeDNA
  4. Record inferred haplotypes for each person antecedent in the matrilineal line to the tester, establishing the mtDNA of the branch
  5. Evaluate whether the haplotype is so common, or the test provided too low resolution to effectively allow for differentiation of mtDNA lines (i.e. if Elizabeth’s type is H, it occurs at such high frequency that full sequence testing will be needed, if it is another type or a specific subclade that is more rare, simply matching to haplogroup may be enough to validate claims for most researchers)
  6. With the mtDNA types sufficiently established, compare between branches

Hypotheses

  1. The reported mtDNA haplotypes of putative branches B-F will not all match the type established for the Elizabeth Miller Roblin Cannif branch A.
  2. Those that do not match cannot be matrilineal descendants of Patience Miller Fowler.
  3. Those that do match are likely matrilineal descendants of Patience Miller Fowler.
  4. If the Mary Miller branch F haplotype matches with the Ann Carpenter branch E haplotype then Ann wife of John is Mary’s sister and the person who signed the affidavit on her pension application (i.e. confirms the connection between these two branches).
  5. If all branches do in fact match, the possibility that a sister or matrilineal cousin of Patience married one of Garret’s brothers should be considered. This would reduce the clarity to be obtained from this project but potentially provides further avenues of investigation.

Finally, the branch A type should be publicly recorded as Patience’s type to enable future research into her origins, which are not currently known. Registering of a full sequence test in FamilyTreeDNA mitosearch would be ideal.

This project is particularly indebted to two publications: The Ketcheson Family (individuals recorded from there have their number prefaced with the letter “K” in square brackets before their names) and Dennis Miller’s Peter Miller 1758-1838.

  • ......... While Frances and Lydia's descent from Benjamin and Elizabeth is probably correct, this is a very tricky branch otherwise: (1) life event alignment with surviving records is very bad and there is no will for Benjamin Clapp (2) they settled in Thurlow, but Clapp first cousins with similar names settled nearby in Hungerford (and the pre-vital marriage records do not include parent's names - it is clear Clapp cousins from both branches are marrying at the same time in the Victoria District marriage registers) (3) generation 4 often had their children before the censuses started and died just before vital records (people could easily be missing). While relying on mtDNA testers from this branch is probably not a good method to establish the haplotype for Elizabeth, once that haplotype is established via a more documented line, testers from this branch (if any modern carriers exist) would benefit. They could test to determine if they descend from Benjamin Clapp and Elizabeth, or Benjamin's brother in Hungerford, Thomas and his wife Sarah Mary Jacobs.

E. Ann Miller married John Carpenter, settled Virginia (an Ann Carpenter is the sister of Mary Miller and provided an affidavit for her application to obtain her husband Peter’s Revolutionary War Pension) F. Mary Miller married Peter Miller, settled Virginia. Peter is Garret’s nephew and is believed to have married his cousin, but which cousin is not clear

LHerman Conversation [5 January 2018]

These two are not daughters of Garret and Patience Miller. I have spent considerable time looking at this claim and published the results on Randy Saylor: Family & Bay of Quinte Records site.

Garret lists his children in his will "Joshua, Mary, Elizabeth, Garrett, Nathan, Sarah, Samuel, Anne, Hampton and Jeremiah.

Joshua ~m~ Jeruaha Smith ..3 unidentified children Mary (Mary Catherine) ~m~ William Garrison...4 children Elizabeth ~m~ Philip Roblin ....8 children Garrett ~m~ Mary Smith ....11 children Nathan ~m~ Rachel Smith (a cousin of Mary) ...1 child Sarah ~m~ John Burgis ...10 children Samuel ~m~ Mary Caniff...9 children Ann (Nancy Ann) ~m~ Joseph Clapp ...8 children Hampton ~m~ 1st Melissa, 2nd Deborah & 3rd Sarah... 16 children Jeremiah....who is not listed in the will of George Fowler in 1809 and is presumed to have died before this date.

From baptisms we also know that Garret & Patience had children:

Phoebe and Absolam neither of whom were listed in his will and are presumed to have died before 1777.

THERE IS NO ADDITIONAL DAUGHTER ANN OR MARY.

The will of "Garrit Miller, of Smith's Clove, Precinct of Cornwall, Orange County, N.Y." (dated 5 October 1777; John Fell was a witness) was probated at Petersfield, Bergen County, N. J. 13 June 1778.

  • Linda, I am fully aware of your opinions since we discussed them extensively in a series of bullying emails you sent me a few years ago. Opinions are not facts. Therefore, I -- as an actual descendant of these families with a personal stake in this -- as opposed to whatever it is that you are (as you told me you are not related) -- am trying to use science to arrive at a definitive explanation in the absence of documentary evidence. I am also fully aware of what you posted on Randy Saylor's website -- without asking me to check your work before referring to the findings that "we" discovered or giving me any credit whatsoever and in the process badly screwing up the Loyalty to the Crown of certain branches of this family. If one of my unfortunate cousins is paying you to research this family I dearly hope they contact me and skip you entirely. If this is not your family, you can butt out. --Artefacts 19:49, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
  • And trust me, you have not put more hours into this than I have and when I got fed up with your emails last time, I held back all the good stuff. --Artefacts 19:53, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
