Children of John and Elizabeth [5 August 2015]

What is the source for the names of their three children? According to the FindAGrave memorial for John, the only mention of his first wife in the family bible was their marriage date. It goes on to say: "His first wife was Elizabeth McCleary Tate. They married 6 Nov 1823. She died 28 Jun 1831 and had 3 known children: James Tate (5 Jun 1828 to 29 Nov 1849), Mary Jane P. (11 Aug 1824 to 23 Dec 1893, AKA Mrs Chas Beale McClung, resided in FL) and John Tate between 25 Nov 1825 to 4 Nov 1894 in OH). I have not proven her children's dates."

We find John Moffett in Augusta County on the 1830 census with 1 male under 5, 1 male 30-39 (himself), 1 female 5-9 (daughter Mary Jane), 1 female 30-39 (1st wife Elizabeth), and 7 slaves. There was another John Moffett with 1 male 5-9, 1 male 10-14, 1 male 30-39, 2 females under 5, 1 female 20-29, and 3 slaves, but the number of children isn't a match.

In 1840, we find him in Lexington, Rockbridge Co VA with 1 male under 10-14, 1 male 40-49 (himself), 1 female under 5 (daughter Margaret Elizabeth), 1 female 15-19 (daughter Mary Jane), 1 female 30-39 (2nd wife Margaret), and 8 slaves.

There were presumably 2 sons living in 1840, but only one boy in the household on those census records. Several trees have John Tate Moffett (1825-1894) as son of John and Jane Moffett. Perhaps John and Elizabeth had only one son (James?) and one daughter (Mary Jane). --KayS 06:16, 5 August 2015 (UTC)
