Comment about Savage [27 January 2020]

[Comment added to page in 2009 by jrich]

We know Elizabeth Hutchinson and Mehitable Warren were the heirs of their father Thomas Clarke Jr. in 1683, and that his widow was named Elizabeth. They look like they should be the Mehitable and Elizabeth Clarke whose births are recorded in Dorchester 1640 and 1642, but those show a mother named Mary, and so, are generally presumed to be the daughters of Thomas Clarke Sr. who married Mary Knight. Unless we find evidence that Thomas Clarke Jr. had an earlier wife named Mary, we must assume this Elizabeth and her sister Mehitable are different individuals than those born in Dorchester. Hence we have little information about when and where they were born, except what little can be guessed based on Elizabeth's marriage in 1661.

The comment above makes no sense.

This comment came in when you merged this page with another Elizabeth Clarke who appeared to be a different person based on the sources originally cited, namely Savage. And it makes perfect sense if you read the entry by Savage who gives mother Mary of this Elizabeth to another Thomas and only names as wife a widow Elizabeth for the Thomas who has children Mehitable Warren and Elizabeth Hutchinson (and that his widow was Elizabeth may be yet another Savage myth). The original post in 2009 long preceded access to the Suffolk wills online, and Savage appeared to be based on the wills, which usually is a good indicator of reasonable research. Despite that, Savage managed to conflate the two, didn't he? A better place for this comment might be on a talk page.

[Hence, this was moved to this page, since recent changes by RolandHenryBakerIII make the comment unnecessary. As I have stated elsewhere, any information found in Savage needs to be confirmed with contemporary records because he made a lot of errors. Wiser than I was in 2009... --Jrich 02:50, 28 January 2020 (UTC) ]
