"The grandfather (William Tomlinson, a saddler by trade, was a man of ability and enterprise, and was financially prospered. Four of his sons, Joseph, Robert, Josiah and Allen, survived to reach mature years. ... William lived far beyond allotted years of man and survived to witness the close of the struggle for Independence and the laying of a sure foundation for our present National prosperity."
