William Robson was married twice, first to Anna Garner Snowden who died in 1858 giving birth to their first child Edward Garner Snowden Robson, and then to Mary Ann James with whom he had nine children. William was first a tide waiter, captain of a small ship that loaded coal from the Gateshead shore to freighters anchored in the Tyne. He then became an outdoor customs officer. He died of liver disease aged 44, at which point Mary Ann married her sister's widower, George Henry Henderson. Ann's sister Jane had died just two months earlier.
