Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA
- Page 223.--Patent (# of acres not listed) to William Pickens (wife Ann), 20th September, 1748. (Note: based upon other records listed below, William Pickens' land was located at Cedar Creek, North Branch of the Shenandoah River, adjoining the land of James Claypool. This record appeared in Augusta County Court records between March-November, 1773, when his wife was Ann Oliver. In 1748, when William Pickens received his patent, he was still married to Elizabeth Kerr).

- Vol. 1 - August 22, 1746. - (88) Ewell vs. Briant--Verdict, "we find for defendant." Atty. filed errors in arrest of judgment--referred to next Court. William Pickins, witness in above suit.
- Vol. 2 - 1749, October 23d--James Claypool, 200, on Cedar Branch, joining Wm. Picken's survey. (Note: provides location of William Pickens' land).
- Vol. 1 - AUGUST, 1753 (B). - Robert Hook and Robert Scot, executors of Samuel Scot, vs. William Picken and Ann, his wife.--Ann, his wife, late Ann Scot. Bond dated 1752. (Note: record proves William Pickens had married Ann, widow of Samuel Scott prior to 1753).
- Page 422.--1st December, 1756. John Scot to Jno. Pickin, mortgage of 400 acres adjoining Cub Run. Col. Woods on one side and James Buseter on the other, £37.15 secured. Teste: Arnold Kuster ( ), Wm. ( ) Pickin, Uriah Humble.
- Page 208.--18th February, 1760. Thomas ( ) Shanklin and Eleanor ( ) to John Shanklin, their son, £10, 220 acres on a branch of Muddy Creek, a branch of North River of Shanandoe, part of 400 acres where Thomas now lives; cor. Green's land. Teste: Robert Shanklin, William ( ) Pickens. Delivered: Thomas Shanklin, 27th August, 1763.
- Vol. 1 - FEBRUARY, 1761. - Scot vs. Scot.--Jane Scot, an infant, by Daniel Smith, her guardian, daughter of Samuel Scot, of Augusta, deceased, in 1749. Jane had a sister and brother. The widow Scot intermarried with William Pickins. Jane's oldest sister was Mary.
- Vol. 1 - MAY 18, 1762. - (214) Saml. Scot, orphan of Saml. Scot--Wm. Pickens, guardian.
- Page 245.--18th May, 1762. William Pickins' ( ) bond (with John Miller, Andrew Bird) as guardian'(appointed) to Samuel Scot, orphan of Samuel Scot.
- Vol. 1 - MAY, 1765 (B) - PETITION. - To the Worshipful Court of Augusta County:
- We, your humble petitioners, pray that your worships would be pleased to grant a road to be cleared from Adam Reader's Mines to Isaac Robertson's, from thence to Widow Wright's Mill, from thence to Thomas Harrison's, on the great road to the Court House, which will be the covenants' road to travel either north or south, to mill or to market.
