William S. Morrow is listed with two wives. The first was Nancy Newton and the second was Amanda J. Swearingen. Tharell Ann reports that the older "kids" said Grandad spoke of a brother or Uncle of his Dad who left the family and his whereabouts were not known. Perhaps he was Ben or older Ben who left Person County NC after 1801.

Children by Nancy Newton were

  • Newton Morrow who was age 9 in 1850
  • Margaret Jane Morrow who was age 5 in 1850
  • Frederick Morrow who was age 1 in 1850

In 1860 Margaret Jane was the only one listed with parent.

William was a Farmer who owned Slaves. He was a confederate sympathiser. Many of his Slaves stayed after the War to work for him.

He was a staunch Methodist.

He was known in the neighborhood as "Uncle Billy".

  7. 7.0 7.1 Obituary, in Newspapers.com Obituary Index, 1800s-current
    Plattsburg Leader - 26 Dec 1902 - Page 5.

"Uncle Billie Morrow departed this life Friday, Dec. 16, 1902, at three p.m. at the age of 89 years, 9 months, and 20 days." [note that Friday was Dec. 19, and paper was Dec. 26, so it's less likely the death was more than a week before.]

Deceased was born in North Carolina in 1813, and at the age of 9 years moved to Kentucky with his mother, his father having died when William was two years old. His first wife preceded him to an unknown world, leaving him with five children, which also have died since.

In September 1855 he was married to Amanda Swearingen, of Clinton County, and to this union were born 11 children, 8 of which are still living...."
