Morrow DNA Group 2 (NC Irish)

This is one of three groups traced to men in North Carolina in the 18th century (the others being Group 4 and Group 6 ). Note these groups are entirely unrelated. There are some tangential relations to Group II, discussed below, that are not related in a reasonable time period, but are related to this group on the scale of 1000s of years in a way the other Morrow groups are not.

Flat River Morrows

Most of this group is believed to originate out of the Flat River area of North Carolina, and DNA testing has been invaluable in confirming connections (and disproving others). Descendants of these men generally match 67/67 or 37/37, with assorted minor mutations that haven't emerged as meaningful.

There are descendants traced to two men, James Morrow 1743-1826 and William 1750-1828, who were contemporaries and potentially brothers. Additional results have in turn confirmed likely sons.

  • James Morrow 1743-1826, died Rutherford Co. NC, some say wife was Elizabeth Baxter.
    • William Morrow 1768-1834, died Randolph MO, m. 1st Sally Jay in Caswell Co. NC, who is now thought to be a son of James Morrow 1743-1826 based on recent research finds.
    • Also likely son, George Morrow b. 1783, d. Marshall Co, AL in 1859.
      • Who is in turn found in records with likely nephew Alfred Morrow, 1805-1860, m. Nancy Simpson.

In addition, two men one generation younger are likely brothers, nephews of James and William:

Finally, John Morrow ~1823, of Lawrence Co, TN, is found in records near Benjamin Morrow m. Nancy Harris, who is believed to be the brother of the above men.

Distant Relations

These groups are included here because their early origins, on the scale of 20-25 generations, relate to Group II, and not at all any other groups. In both cases, that connection busts long-held theories about relations to other groups, but additional participants and research needed and welcome.

John of Rowan Co, NC

Two descendants of Joseph Samuel Morrow, ~1820-1864, m. Nancy Finley in Greene Co, IL, match each other and are both otherwise distant relations of the rest of Group II. Joseph is thought to be the son of William m. Jane who died in 1848 in Greene County; William was in turn the son of John of Rowan County, whose 1815 will names as sons several children who settled in Greene County, Illinois.

  • However, another, better documented son of William, Jesse Morrow, has descendants who do not match the Joseph Samuel descendants. They do, probably, match Group 4, but the match is only 34/37 markers and more tests are needed.
    • A posting on the ILGreene Rootsweb list years ago summarized the estate of William Morrow, Jr., which was probated in 1840 in Greene County. The record allegedly stated that William had no children, so his estate was to be divided amongst the children of his parents William and Jane: John, Jesse, Abner, Zachariah, Elizabeth Allen, and Sally Rhodes. Joseph was alive and in the area, but not listed, suggesting he was not a sibling of William Jr.--but also the Zachariah in the area was profiled in the local county history in 1885, naming his father as John and his uncle as William. More testing (and/or indexing of the actual estate records) is needed.

Robert Morrow m. Elizabeth Shaw

Robert Morrow m. Elizabeth Shaw in 1779 in Guilford Co, NC and died in Warren County, TN in 1824. Several descendants match Group 2 on a very long timescale, which disproves speculation that Robert:

  • is the son of Rev. David Morrow m. Elizabeth Catlett, who was in turn the son of David Morrow of Norfolk Co, VA. David of Norfolk's line is Group 1, and his son David has been separately identified.
  • is related to William Morrow ca1750-1828, above, who also died in Warren Co. TN in the 1820s, except very distantly.
  • is related to any of the other North Carolina men Worth Ray tied him to in Tennessee Cousins.

The closest DNA matches for Robert descendants, with near 90% chance of MRCA within 8 generations, are descendants of James Murray (1650-1704) m. Jemima Morgan, and most commonly, Thomas Murray, 1722-1805, d. in Washington Co, TN. Washington County is on the border with NC, halfway between Guilford, NC and Warren County, TN - directly between as the crow flies (and presumably, as one would walk). Thomas's will lists his children and of course does not include a Robert.
