  • William Lowe - Was born in Wetzel county, W. Va., May 26, 1834, and was a son of George and Priscilla (Ice) Lowe, deceased. He was married first to Sarah Carl (Carroll?), who passed away December, 1890. July 12, 1892, he was again married in this county to Elizabeth J. Yoho, who was born in Marshall county, W. Va., Aug. 27, 1840. She was a daughter of Louis and Elenore (Cooper) Yoho, no longer numbered with the living.

Comrade Lowe was engaged in farming when the war began, and was 27 years old when he enrolled from Romney, W. Va., Dec. 29, 1861. He enlisted as a private in Co. H, 1st W. Va. V. I. In December, 1862, he was granted a leave of absence of one week and again in 1863 for same length of time, reporting for duty at end of each.

He took part in but one battle, Moorefield, where he received a gunshot wound in right hip, where the ball is still lodged; he was also taken prisoner at that battle but was left on field. He was taken to hospital at Parkersburg, W. Va., for treatment for wound; six weeks later he was transferred to Wheeling where he remained nine months. He did considerable guard and garrison duty and was honorably discharged Jan. 1, 1865, at Wheeling, W. Va.

His brother David and half-brother Levi both served in 6th W. Va. V. I.; his present wife's brother, Petterson F. Yoho, served in W. Va. V. I.; his first wife's brother Samuel also served in the late war; his father, Geo. Lowe, was a soldier in the war of 1812.     His birth date is given as 27 May 1824 and his age as 101 years, 10 months and 9 days, but this is not supported by the 1850 census, which indicates that he was born about 1834.
