William Lovell was baptised on 29th April 1810 at St Paul's Walden in Hertfordshire, son of Thomas and Ann Lovell. He later gave his place of birth as Whitwell, the main village in the parish of St Paul's Walden.
On 19th June 1831, aged 21, he married Susannah Swallow. They married in her native parish of Wheathampstead, a few miles south of St Paul's Walden, although their marriage record notes that William was living in King's Walden at the time. Their first child was born at Wheathampstead the following year, although again the family's abode was given as King's Walden.
Between 1832 and 1853 William and Susannah appear to have had eleven children, born variously in Wheathampstead, King's Walden and Offley parishes. However, five of the children died when less than a year old, and another died when she was about five years old.
The 1841 census finds the family living at Darley Hall in the parish of King's Walden. William was working as an agricultural labourer. By 1851 they had moved to the hamlet of Mangrove Green, which straddled the parishes of Offley and Lilley.[6] In 1861 they were living at a cottage at Mangrove Green next to the William IV public house, which stands on the east side of the green. In 1861 William was described as a ploughman.
William died in 1868, aged 58. Susannah survived him by 27 years.
