William Linney was born around 1829 at Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, son of a washerwoman called Mary Linney, formerly Tring, and her husband Thomas Linney, an agricultural labourer. The 1841 census finds William living with his parents and some of his siblings at America Place in Leighton Buzzard.[10]
On 10th November 1850, William married Mary Warner. They appear to have had at least ten children together. In 1851 they were living at North Street in Leighton Buzzard and William was working as a farm labourer, whilst Mary was a straw plait maker.
William's father died in 1854.
In 1856 William was convicted of assaulting Ann Linney, wife of his brother James. Apparently he had borrowed money from her for bread and flour, and when she came to ask for it back he turned her out of the house, struck her on the head and knocked her into the road. He was fined one shilling and had to pay sixteen shillings and six pence costs, or if he could not pay then he would spend fourteen days in prison. It is not recorded whether he paid or went to prison.
William's mother died in 1861.
Each census from 1861 to 1891 find William and Mary living at a different address in Leighton Buzzard with some of their children.
William died on 11th April 1893 at 18 East Street in Leighton Buzzard. Mary survived him by fourteen years.

ASSAULT.-Wm. Linney, of Leighton Buzzard, was summoned by Ann Linney, his brother's wife, for assaulting her at Leighton, on the 16th of February. Mr. Jones conducted the defence. From the evidence of the complainant, it appeared that the defendant owed her some money for bread and flour. She accordingly went to ask him to pay her all or part of the money, when he took hold of her and turned her out of the house, and then struck her on the head and knocked her into the road. Several witnesses having been examined on both sides, the chairman said the assault was proved, and ordered the defendant to pay a fine of 1s. and 16s. 6d. costs, or fourteen days' imprisonment.
- ↑ America Place has since been redeveloped and the street renamed Garden Hedge.
