William Lake's origins have yet to be established. If the age quoted when he died was correct then he was born around 1731 or 1732. His first confirmed sighting is on 6th November 1769, when he married Abigail Males at Codicote in Hertfordshire. At the time of their marriage they were both living in the parish.

By the following year they had moved about nine miles north to Ickleford, where they had three children baptised between 1770 and 1777. They then moved to the neighbouring parish of Pirton where they had another eight children baptised between 1779 and 1793.

William died on 18th April 1793, and was buried at Pirton two days later. He was said to be 61 years old. His burial record describes him as a farmer. His youngest child would not be baptised until November that year.

Abigail survived him by nearly 43 years.
