Revolutionary War Pension Information

Information from “Virginia/West Virginia Genealogical Data from Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Records”, Vol. 2, compiled by Patrick G. Wardell, Lt. Col. U.S. Army Ret. :

Hill, William - entered service 1774 in Botetourt County, Virginia; died in Monroe County, Virginia; married Rachel Poage, Botetourt County, Virginia; widow applied for Bounty Land Warrant age 89 in Barbour County, Virginia, 1856; Bounty Land Application rejected, insufficient proof of service*; widow was living in 1860 when soldier's records were lost in house fire. F-BLW rejected Register 238611, R1279.

  • Note: this William Hill appears to have been only 12 years old when his supposed military service was claimed, so it appears that the Pension Review Board was likely justified in rejecting his claim for "insufficient proof of service". It was not unusual for men that may have been too young to have served in the Revolutionary War (or their families) to apply for a Revolutionary War Service Pension, even though they may not have actually served in the military during that time period.
