Importation oath of Patrick Hays and John Hays, Orange County, 1740

Overview

This article is for William son of Patrick Hays=Frances.

William is listed in Patrick's 1740 importation oath. He may have been an adult at that time. Williams father settled on Beverly Manor and Bordens Grant by 1740. About 1760 he left the area, and relocated to Derry Township, in Lancaster/Dauphin County PA where other members of the extended Hays family lived, including Patrick's brother, Hugh Hays (1). William apparently stayed behind, probably living on one or another of his father's parcels. In 1769 Patrick sold a 259 acre tract in Beverley Manor, to William.

Page 524.--16th August, 1769. Same [Patrick Hays, in Derry Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania],to William Hays, £250, 259 acres by deed, 18th May, 1750, in Beverley Manor, Thomas Yates' land. Delivered: James Mitchell per Mr. Hayes' order, 14th April, 1777.

By 1777 William had left the area, also going to Pennsylvania, but settling in Peters Township, Cumberland County. The exact location where he was living has not been identified, but Cumberland County lies on the south side of the Susquehanna, adjoining Dauphin County on the east side of the Susquehanna, where his father resided in the 1760.

At the same time

MAY 20, 1777...(184) Commission to Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, for privy examination of Janet, wife of William Hays--deed to James Mitchell.

Which clearly establishes the identity of William's wife as Janet (or as more commonly spelled at the time, Jean or Jane).

In 1779 we have the note

Vol. 1 - MAY 20, 1779. - (547) William Hays, returned no inhabitant.

This may be the final record in Old Augusta for William son of Patrick (1). On the other hand, this could be a reference to a different William Hays who also has moved elsewhere. In any case we have no further records in Old Augusta that can be easily assign to William son of Patrick (1).
