Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • William Hamilton received a patent "on Middle River of Shanandore, corner Robert Reed's land" on 29 May 1760, as listed in record below:
  • Page 413.--Patent to William Hamilton, wife Margaret, 29th May, 1760.
  • Page 10 - William Hamilton, 50 acres, Middle River. Adjoining his own land, James Blair. June 13, 1761. [Abstract of Land Grant Surveys, 1761-1791, Augusta & Rockingham Counties, Virginia, by Peter Cline Kaylor, pg. 40.].

Disposition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 426.--__ _____, 1769. William ( ) Hamilton and Margret ( ) to their son Patrick Hamilton, £10, 100 acres patented to William Hamilton, 29th May, 1760, on Middle River of Shanandore, corner Robert Reed's land. Delivered: Patrick Hamilton, 15th August, 1771. (Note: this record appears to be problematic since Patrick (b. abt. 1757?) would have still been a minor. Was Patrick Hamilton the son of a prior marriage?).
  • Page 314.--17th August, 1772. William ( ) Hamilton and Margret to James Kirkpatrick. Delivered to John Sharp, the now proprietor, 25th March, 1795.
  • Page 314.--17th August, 1772. William ( ) Hamilton and Margaret to John Poage, 6 acres, part of 235 acres where said Hamilton formerly lived on south side of Middle River.
