Enlisted as a Private in Co. F, 87th N.Y. Infantry "Brooklyn Rifles" on 11 Nov 1861 at age 35. He was a veteran of the 1862 "Peninsular Campaign" in Virginia.

Private Brimlow contracted disease as a result of his wounds in Williamsburg, Va. and remained in Camp Pitcher at a field hospital. He was transferred to the Division hospital near Falmouth, Va. and later died there on January 25, 1863.
