The following appears on the Methodist Archives and Research Centre website at http://rylibweb.man.ac.uk/data1/dg/methodist/bio/biob.html:

William Harold Beales (1886-1967) was born in Bingham, Nottinghamshire, the son of the Methodist minister William Beales. He trained for the ministry at Didsbury and joined the staff of the Severn Valley Mission in 1910. Beales served as a circuit minister until 1934 when he was appointed to the Home Mission Department. In 1940, he was appointed Warden of the Wesley Deaconess Order and continued in that post until retirement in 1952.

During his ministry in Cambridge from 1924 to 1930 he inspired a number of undergraduates, who became known as the "Cambridge Group". Their witness was the beginning of a movement of Methodist Societies which spread to other British Universities and Colleges. After superannuation, Beales retired to Cambridge.
