Educated at the University of Manchester.

1919-26 - Lecturer in Economic History at University of Sheffield. Avid supporter of the Workers' Educational Association. (Times obituary)

1926-56 - Lectured in Economic History at the London School of Economics; promoted to Reader in 1931; held several Visiting Professorships at American universities, including Colombia, Harvard and Washington during the 1950s.

1929 - Described as Mr H L Beales, M.A., London University in the funeral report for his mother.

1933 - Described in the obituary/funeral report for his father as Mr H L Beales, M.A., reader in economic history at the University of London. Floral tribute from "Lance and family".

1945 - Mr and Mrs Lance Beales of Finchley named as the parents of Mary Beales in marriage announcement in The Times (30 July pg 1 col A)

1956 - Retired from the LSE.

1958 - His collection of about 10,000 books and pamphlets was purchased by the Wesleyan Library.

1969 - Received Hon DLitt from Exeter University. Donated a collection of papers to the university.

In addition to his academic posts, Lance was a fierce atheist who advocated a secular, humanist socialism and served as an editorial advisor for several publishers. His own writing included "The Industrial Revolution: 1750 - 1850" and "The Early English Socialists". He co-edited "Memoirs of the Unemployed".
