William Bastock was born around February 1807 in Warwick, son of Elizabeth Bastock, formerly Hartwell, and her husband George Bastock, a labourer. William was baptised on 29th November 1807 in the parish of St Mary’s in Warwick, when he was said to be nine months old. William appears to have been the fifth of seven children. His youngest sister’s baptism in 1813 notes that the family lived on Saltisford, the main road out of Warwick to the north-west.

On 3rd September 1839, aged 32, William married Elizabeth Reynolds. They married at St Mary’s church in Warwick. She was several years younger than him, being eighteen when they married. William’s younger brother John had married Elizabeth’s older sister Harriet a few years earlier in 1834.

William and Elizabeth went on to have twelve children in Warwick between 1840 and 1866, although one died when just over a year old in 1855. The 1841 and 1851 censuses both find the family living at Commercial Buildings on Saltisford. William worked as a plasterer.

William’s mother died in April 1857. His father died just over four months later in September.

The 1871 census finds William and Elizabeth living at 14 West Rock (also labelled on contemporary maps as ‘Saltisford Rock’) which was at the southern end of Saltisford, linking Market Hill and Theatre Street to the main part of Saltisford. The roads in the area have been remodelled and renamed since, such that West Rock now forms part of Theatre Street.

Elizabeth would live at 14 West Rock for the rest of her life. The 1881 census describes her as a laundress. Elizabeth died at home at 14 West Rock on 29th August 1883, aged 62.

William survived her by five years. He left the Saltisford area of town where he appears to have lived his entire life up until then and moved to Avon Street on the eastern side of Warwick. He died in 1888, aged 81, and was buried on 5th November 1888 at All Saints’ Church in the Emscote area of Warwick.
