George Bastock was baptised on 28th July 1776 in the parish of St Nicholas in Warwick. He was the fifth of six children of Mary Bastock, formerly Butcher, and her husband Robert Bastock.
On 25th April 1796, aged 19, George was married at St Mary’s Church in Warwick to Elizabeth Hartwell, who was 24. She was originally from Adderbury in Oxfordshire but by the time of her marriage was described as living in the parish of Warwick St Mary.
George and Elizabeth stayed in Warwick after their marriage, having seven children baptised there between 1797 and 1813. George worked as a labourer and gardener. Their youngest daughter’s baptism in 1813 notes that the family lived on Saltisford, the main street out of Warwick to the north-west.
The 1841 and 1851 censuses both find George and Elizabeth living at Commercial Buildings on Saltisford. In 1851 they were both described as paupers and George as a former gardener.
Elizabeth died in 1857 aged 85, being buried on 29th April. George outlived her by less than five months. He died aged 81 and was buried on 6th September 1857.
