Charles Thomas Bastock was born early in 1840 at Warwick, and baptised there at the parish church of St Mary on Christmas Day. He was the son of Elizabeth Bastock, formerly Reynolds, and her husband William Bastock, a plasterer. William and Elizabeth had married just a few months before Charles was born. The family lived on Saltisford, the main road leading out of Warwick to the north-west. Charles was the eldest of the couple's eleven children.

The 1841 and 1851 censuses both find Charles living with his parents and siblings on Saltisford.

On 15th May 1864, aged 24, Charles married Emma Starkey, who was 21. Although they were both from Warwick, they were married at St Michael's Church (later the Cathedral) in Coventry, ten miles north of Warwick. After their marriage they returned to Warwick, where the 1871 census finds them living at 5 Cherry Street, with Charles working as a bricklayer.

Charles and Emma do not appear to have had any children. By the time of the 1881 census they were still living in Cherry Street, although now at number 26.

Emma died on 15th December 1887, aged 45. She and Charles had been married for 23 years. After her death, Charles continued to live at 26 Cherry Street, with Emma's niece Elizabeth Starkey staying with him as housekeeper at the time of the 1891 census. By 1901 Charles had moved again within the street to 54 Cherry Street, where he was living alone in a five roomed house at the time of the 1901 census.

Some time between 1901 and 1906 Charles left Cherry Street where he had lived for over 30 years, and moved to 10 Stand Street, on the opposite side of Warwick. He died there on 29th April 1906, aged 66.
