L. H. Almy describes an account book kept by William Almy in New York, and draws some conclusions about his occupations:

The first page of entry in th book is dated "1805 July 27th" and relates to an account of "Peltish Adams to Wm Almy Dr", continuing over about one year, showing William Almy retailed meat.... In 1810 he kept some boarders, furnished grog, rum, etc., at meals, which seems to indicated that he was an innkeeper. He did cooper work, hauled timber, let teams and slaughtered in 1811 and 1812, engaged in haying and chopping wood, etc., in 1814, retailed meat in 1816-17, and made shoes and slaughtered in 1820 and 1822. It is apparent that William was no idler and that he was quite versatile in his talents. Ho doubt he had some assistance from his sones who would be from 29 to 42 years of age by 1822.[2]

William's half-brother Chrisopher also left Portsmouth in 1794 and eventually settled near Middleburgh.[3]
