Will of Thomas Short of Essex Co. 1740,
In the Name of God Amen. I Thomas Short of ye County of Essex and Parish of St. Anns being very sick and weak but of perfect sence and memory thanks be to Allmighty God for ye same and calling to mind ye Mortallity of my body and that it is appointed once for all men to die do make and ordain this to be my Last Will and testament revoking and making voyd all other wills heretoforce by me made in manner as follows first I bequeath my Soul to Almighty God that Gave it me in hope of a joyfull reasurrection at the Last day through the merrits and mediations of my blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ my body to the earth to be decently Burried at the discretions of my Executors hereinafter named and as for what, Worly Estate it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life I give and bequeath as follows Imprimise
Item my will is that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid
Item I give and bequeath unto my son William Short one feather bed and furniture.
Item I give and bequeath unto my son John Short all my land and plantation whereon I now dwell to him and his heirs forever
Item I leave my Negro woman named Judy and her child to be disposed of by my Executor towards the discharging my debts etc.
Item I lend unto my loving wife Katherine Short one third part of my estate that has not been before bequeath to her during her natural life or until she marries
Item - give and bequeath unto my daughter Anne Golding one shilling sterling.
Item. All the rest of my Estate of what Nature and property so ever I give to be equally devided among my five children by name: John Short, Elixabeth Short, Short, Katherine Short, Sarrah Ann Short and Susanna Short to them and their heirs for ever.
And Lastly I constitute and apoint my loving wife Katherine Short, William Short and Charles Brown my whole and sole Executrix and Executors of this my Last will and Testament.
In Witnessing whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my Seal this 20th day of June 1740.

Signed, sealed and delivered in presments of William Gray, William Boulware, Samuel Landrum Junior.
Memorandum that at a court held for Essex at Tappahannock on the 21st day of Oct. I740 This last will and testament of Thomas Shortt deced being presented by Catherine Shortt the Executrix therein named was duly proved by the Oath of William Boulware and Samuel Landrum Jr. two of the witnesses thereto and William Short and Charles Brown the Executors therein Named came into Court and Relinquished their right of Executership thereto. And at a court held for the said County on the 17th of Feb.1740 [1741?] the said will was also proved by the oath of William Gray and the other witnessthereto. And afterwards at a Court held for the said County on the 2Ist day of April 1741 came the aforesaid Catherine Shortt and declared that she would not stand to or abide by the said will so far as relates to her self and then on the motion of the said Catherine and her performing what the Law in such cases requires a Certificate was granted her for obtaining Letters of Admon on the decedents Estate with the said will annext and the said will was ordered to be recorded.
