Came from Ireland to Newcastle, Delaware in 1771, settled in Chester, Pennsylvania. Married Sarah Gardiner in 1775. Her family did not approve because he was a poor man. Served in the Pennsylvania militia, 1776; as sergeant in the Penn troops of the line, 1777; moved with his family to the Chester District of South Carolina in 1778, and was with Steel's Rangers, the South Carolina militia, 1780-1781. He was captured at the Battle of Hanging Rock in South Carolina and held prisoner by the British. His ultimate release after 7 months was due to the persistent efforts of his wife who was called a "Heroine of the Revolution."
