Sarah Gardiner's marriage to Thomas McCalla, a poor immigrant from Ireland, was opposed by her family, so in 1778 the young family left Pennsylvania for South Carolina. She was called a "Heroine of the Revolution" due to her persistent, and ultimately successful, efforts to free her husband and the other men captured in the Battle of Hanging Rock, South Carolina and held prisoner in Camden, SC.
