A "Manuscript Genealogy" created by about 1775 belonging to 'Lawyer' Elkinah Leonard, a great-grandson of James Leonard (Thomas's father), stated that Thomas was born in Pontypool. Elisha Clark Leonard (1819-1894), "a leading genealogist of Bristol County, Massachusetts, who researched the Leonard family quite thoroughly" "presumed that the statement was correct". [See, however, the evidence that Thomas was baptized in Staffordshire.]

  7. 7.0 7.1 Thomas Leonard, in England. Births and Christenings, 1538-1975. (FamilySearch, Ancestry.com, Findmypast).

baptized 8 Aug 1641 in Kinfare [Kinver], Stafford, England
    parents: James and Jane Leonard

Bill Barton [1], who has done extensive research on the Leonard family, believes this to be the baptismal record of the Thomas Leonard who immigrated to New England at an early age with his father, James. Kinver is close to Bilston, Staffordshire, 'a center of the "Black Country" iron industry', where there is evidence that the Leonard's had a heavily mortgaged ironworks (see PRE-AMERICAN ANCESTRY of our LEONARD IRONWORKERS).
