Note: NEHGR, p. 17:37, "Marriages, Births and Deaths at Taunton, Mass.", says 19 Oct 1692, but one must assume since all town records say 17, and the gravestone says 18, that this is the result of misreading the gravestone's "18". "b. Oct. 25, 1647, prob. Braintree, Mass."
How is the date known if the location is not? The birth date "25 Oct 1647" does not appear to be in Taunton VR, or any other collection of americanancestors.org's collection of vital records. Family Bible? Not the father's Bible, since Joseph's siblings don't have precise birth dates.
The author likely presumes Braintree because it is where Joseph's father was in 1652 (NEHGR 5:414b) before moving to Taunton with his brother Henry (shortly after 21 Oct 1652) to build the Raynham forge (NEHGR 5:405). However, James was in Lynn in 1651 (NEHGR 5:414b), where the first ironworks in North America started operating in 1646 (Wikipedia).
Note that 1647 is a year or two earlier than implied by his age at death.

includes photos of his gravestone
- ↑ His brother Thomas came to New England "when a small boy" (NEHGR 5:407), so possibly by the time Joseph was born.
