  3.   The probate files cited above are necessary to be sure about the children of Thomas because of a combination of erroneous records and bad genealogy.

The erroneous record is found in the Chelmsford VRs:
*HEILD, Gershom, s. Gershom and Sarah, [born] Sept. 4, 1727.
The probate shows clearly the father was intended to be Thomas since Gershom is identified as the only surviving son.

One of the seemingly most complete coverages is found in Source:Parlin, Frank Edson. Parlin Genealogy, the Descendants of Nicolas Parlin of Cambridge, Mass, p. 25, but as will hopefully be shown, this source appears to have completely mangled this family. First, it says:
    *First marriage to Abigail Butterfield
    *Son Thomas, b. 1727
    *Daughter Abigail, b. 1729
No such marriage can be found, nor are such children mentioned in the probate. In fact, they conflict with sons Gershom and Ephraim, so cannot belong to the same family. This appears to be confusing this family with the following Concord (not Chelmsford) records which must be a different couple (possibly the Thomas Hale who m. Abigail Pillsbury?):
*HEAL, Thomas, s. Thomas and Abigail, May 9, 1727.
*HALE, Abigail [HEALD], d. Thomas and Abigail, Jan. 20, 1728-9.

The fictitous son of Thomas and Sarah, Thomas Heald b. 1727, is shown by the Parlin Genealogy as marrying Elizabeth Boynton. She is a widow, b. 1703. Thus it is nearly inconceivable that this Elizabeth Boynton would marry a man b. 1727. Instead, she married the older Thomas Heald, b. 1698/99. No death record for his first wife Sarah has been found, but she must have died before this 1759 marriage and the probate clearly shows that the widow of the father was named Elizabeth.

The Parlin Genealogy also shows Thomas' brother Gershom marrying Hannah Blood. This marriage occurred in 1750, per Westford records, when Thomas' brother Gershom would have been 60. Gershom and Hannah (Blood) Heald then proceeded to have 8 children whose births are recorded in Westford. So clearly, it was not Thomas' brother Gershom, but the son Gershom. (I can find no record of a marriage or death for the brother Gershom and he appears to have d.s.p.)
