I am pleased to send on this information regarding our mutual ancestor Steward Cox and his descendents. You are related to Steward through his first wife Juliann Ivins and I am related through his second wife Jerusha Rudderow. Steward and Jerusha named their 3rd son George Washington Cox--he was my great Grandfather.

The Cox Family Bible mentioned as a source of information Steward's parents and first wife's name, their marriage and her death is in the family of George W. Cox and pertains to them, with the exception of the info I am sending.

Steward must have been a difficult character, as you will see in the attached information. His second wife, Jerusha died before him and left him a touching note to the effect that she had prayed for him for years that he might seek religion and she hoped that he would be prompted by her death to do so "in hopes to meet you in heaven".

It took me years to come up with the information on Stewards death, I doubt that my grandmother even knew how her Grandfather Cox had died. Only the date is noted in the family bible.

As regards Lee Miller, Stewards possible 3rd wife, the only record I have found was merely the marriage license, no marriage record, possibly it never took place.

If you have a death date and place for John Ivins Cox would you ej-mail it to me?

More notes from Jody Harvey (received her records by mail)

1850 census, Steward lists his occupation as bricklayer, always afterward as farmer.

Their move from Randolph Co., IN to Pleasant Twp., Wabash Co., IN took place between 1850 and 1860.

Information on this couple (Steward and Jerusha) from IGI, US Census and marriage record. Connection to my (Jody Harvey) great grandfather, George W. Cox, proven by George Cox death record in file.

Birth date approx per 1850 and 1870 US Census. Two different spelling his and wife's names on marriage record. George W. Cox death record uses Steward spelling and gives birthplace as Trenton, NJ.

Marriage record (to Jerusha Rudderow) in file, date 10 Sept 1844. One or the other of this couple was married previously as 1850 census lists sons aged 13 & 15 (probably Steward) as Jerusha would have been 18 at the time of eldest son birth, she was married under the name Rudderow which was her maiden name and the sons are listed as Cox on census record 1850)

WABASH TIMES (WABASH, IN) published an obit on 3 June 1887. The caption: CUT HIS THROAT

"Word has reached here of the suicide in his Colorado home of Stewart Cox a few years ago a resident of this city and a life long resident of Wabash County. Aside from the facts that he suicided by cutting his throat and that he lived for several hours after the rash deed, the information is meager.

Ten years ago Stewart Cox was one of the most prosperous farmers in Pleasant township and was the owner of a model farm just west of Laketon. His wife died about ten years ago and shortly after this his bereavement he had trouble with the C. & A. railroad about the right of way through his farm. These troubles seemed to weigh heavily upon his mind and in disgust he sold his farm and came to this city to live with his son Robert, for whom he had bought an interest in the dry goods firm of Ruddell Bros. then of this city but now of Kokomo. This investment proved financially disastrous, and about four years ago, considerably reduced in means, father and son left her and located in Colorado. It is rumored that their bad luck followed them to their Western home, and now comes the intelligence that the elder Cox had ended his worry and trouble by taking his own life. He was highly respected and had many friends in this city and county.

Have in file some land records of Steward Cox in Wabash Co., IN: 2 March 1864 Steward and Jerush (of Wabash Co) sell land. 30 June 1882 sells land (his home place?) to Robt S & Martha Cox. They sold this same land 2 mo. later. This land had an (easement?) of 1/4 section of right of way appropriated by Atlantic & Chicago Railway Co. 16 June 1882 Steward sells 2 town lots in North Manchester, IN to David Bunker. 16 June 1882 Steward sells 2 town lots in North Manchester, IN to Laura Bunker. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Marriage license issued to Steward and Lee Miller listed in Wabash Co. Marriage Records 1835-1899, SLC 977.283v22w, marriage book 8, record 2089.

Lee and a small girl, Alice Kesmer, were listed in Steward's household on 1880census with Lee listed as a housekeeper. His county land records all state that he was a single man, as do papers in his probate file from Weld Co., CO. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Per Steward Cox's Weld Co., Colorado homestead file, Steward W Cox was single when he filed for the land in May 1884 and single when he died 11 May 1887, age 76. His son, Robert Sutton Cox, was his executor and listed his heirs as John I Cox, William R, Cox, George W. Cox, and Ellen Cox Shoemaker along with the children of Joseph D. Cox deceased Caleb S. Cox, Samuel E. Cox and Charles H. Cox. Says Steward died at his son Robert's house in Loveland, Larimer CO. Says Steward's land was worked by sons (plural) during his periods of illness,,,,, Steward lived alone. Steward had not yet received his patent on the land in Weld Co when he died and the son later was able to prove his claim and get the patent. Probate file does not yield info about division of property or residence of heirs other than Robert S Cox, executor. Perhaps receipts from heirs or other papers not copied and sent to me (Jody Harvey) by researchers at CO State Archives. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
