"organized at Indianapolis, Ind., and mustered in March 13, 1865. Left State for Harper's Ferry, W. VA., March 16. Attached to 1st Brigade, 3nd Provisional Div, Army of the Shenandoah and guard duty at Charleston, Stevensons Depot, and Summit Point, Berryville, Harpers Ferry and Maryland Heights till August. Mustered out August 4, 1865. Lost during service 44 enlisted men by disease." ----- [cos1776 27 Jan 2014 Note of Caution: According to other sources1, he served in Co. I of the 47th Ind Inf, NOT the 147th.] -----

John Ivan Cox attended common school, favorite study history. He lived in Richmond, Wabash, Warsaw, IN. Married 21 years. He had 7 sons and three daughters. one son died at 21 years and one daughter at 6 weeks. occupations were shoemaker and harnessmaker. Lumber dealer and mill hand. He died at 57 years of age 1898.
He was kindly, affectionate and a great bible student. ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Appearing as neighbors to Steward Cox on 1860 census are 2 Fogarty families: Wm, Carpenter, age 38 bn NJ and Geo, farmer age 28 bn NJ.
