THE COMMONWEALTH of Virginia to John Rone, James Ruffin and David Parnel Gent. of King William County Greeting whereas Sterling Ruffin Esq. & Alice his wife of the County of King William by their certain Indenture of Bargain and Sale bearing date the 19th Day of May 1789 have sold and conveyed unto Thomas Saunders of Brunswick County the fee simple estate of one hundred and ninety two acres of land with the appurtenances lying and being in the said County of Brunswick and whereas the said Alice Ruffin cannot conveniently travel to our Court . . . to make acknowledgment of the said conveyance . . . therefore we do give unto you or any two or more of you full power to receive the acknowledgment which the said Alice Ruffin shall be willing to make before you of the conveyance aforesaid . . . and we do therefore command you that you do personally go to the said Alice Ruffin and receive her acknowledgment of the same and examine her privitely and apart from the said Sterling her husband . . . the 20th of October 1789. KING WILLIAM Pursuant to the within commission to us and others directed went to the house of Sterling Ruffin within mentioned and separate and apart from the said Sterling examined the within named Alice his wife touching her relinquishment of her right of dower in the land contained in the deed and whether she is willing the same should be recorded for answer she saith that she does release the same freely and voluntarily without the threats or persuasions of the said Sterling her husband and is willing that the same shall be recorded given under hands & seals this 5th Day of February 1790. Signed by John Roane and James Ruffin. Brunswick County Court May the 24th 1790. This Commission was returned together with the Certificate of the Execution thereof is ordered to be recorded.
