    Hon. Stephen Whitney [#2510], s/o Josiah Whitney [#1045] and Anna Scollay, b. Harvard, Mass 1 Jul 1784, d. Conway, Mass, 12 Jul 1852, m. 13 Jul 1810 Mary A. Burgess.
[Note: the birth is not found in Harvard records (only his sister Nancy is), or elsewhere, and Stephen labels his birthplace as NH in the 1850 census. In a deed (Cheshire Vol. 25, p. 20, 21), Josiah is "of Temple" buying land in Packersfield and other places, so it appears he moved to New Hampshire quite a few years before Stephen was born. Pierce gives few specifics of how he knows the date he presents. Pierce's data appears to be copied by other sources, such as Whitney Research Group, which specifies the Harvard VRs as a source, referencing the birth of his uncle Stephen in error.]
