Stephen Cox (of Cumberland Co., VA), son of William and Sarah Cox, was married to Judith WOODSON, daughter of John and Judith (Tarleton) Woodson. A secondary source states that they had the following children: Stephen, William, Josiah, and Judith Cox.

However, an examination of the surviving records of Cumberland Co., VA paints a different picture. The will of Stephen Cox (d.1748) is found in the first few pages of the first Cumberland Co., VA Will Book. It is in fragments and from all reports I've read, including ADVENTURERS OF PURSE AND PERSON, it's illegible. Judith (Woodson) Cox left a will, but only mentions her son, Josiah Cox. However, Stephen Cox, "the younger," whose will was probated in 1758 names his mother, Judith Cox and siblings: William Cox, Josiah Cox, Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary, and Tabitha Cox. This would contradict the secondary source and since the will would be a primary source, naturally would be the more accurate record. Therefore, Stephen and Judith (Woodson) Cox would have had more than the four children previouly attributed to them.

    28. Stephen Cox

Stephen COX inherited from his father the plantation where he lived. This was originally in Henrico Co., VA, became Goochland Co., VA in 1728, and would become Cumberland Co., VA in 1749. On April 11, 1732 Stephen COX received 800 acres in Goochland Co., VA on the north side of the Appomattox River at the mouth of Muddy Creek, and on Aug 15, 1737, he received 400 acres more, on a branch of Tare Wallet Run and Little Guinea Creek. He also bought 763 acres in Goochland Co., VA and 381 acres in Amelia Co., VA (The Virginia Genealogical Society, Quarterly, Vol. 18, P. 117; Cumberland County Will Book 1, P. 165-166)
