Sarah Upfield was baptised on 2nd March 1838 at Petworth in Sussex, daughter of John and Ann Upfield. She grew up in Petworth, appearing there in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses with her parents and siblings.

On 9th May 1857, aged 19, Sarah married a fisherman called Alfred Grant. He was from the coastal village of Sidlesham, which is where they married and settled. Between 1858 and 1881 they had twelve children (five boys and seven girls) baptised at Sidlesham. They lived in the Mill area of Sidlesham, and appear to have lived for many years at a house called Island Cottage (which is still there, on the road now known as Mill Lane).

Alfred died in 1906, aged about 74. Sarah continued to live at Island Cottage, appearing there with several of her children in the 1911 census. She died in 1921, aged 83.
