Mark James Grant was baptised on 6th September 1864 at Sidlesham in Sussex, son of Sarah Grant, formerly Upfield, and her husband Alfred Grant, a fisherman. He appears in each census from 1871 to 1901 living with his parents and siblings in the Mill area of Sidlesham, apparently at Island Cottage for most of the time. Mark followed his father's profession and also became a fisherman. Mark's father Alfred died in 1904, after which Mark continued to live with his mother, appearing with her in the 1911 census, still at Island Cottage. He has yet to be researched after 1911.
