Notes for Sarah Cole:
There`s a lovely passage in an old book (Basset Down, A Country House, by
Mary Arnold Forster, published in 1950) which records an interview with John
Painter about his mother Sarah:
`He talked to me again about his old mother.
`A rare brave old soul she wur - bless her. Yuss, us lived in Hook, and her’
d walk oop t’yur farm to thâ ields at at Beech Copse; and udlie down wiâ I
in ditch till ‘twur daylight, and then her’d begin leasing. Her’d work all
day leasing t’carn, and cum whoam at night wi’a bushel o’carn. Her’d drag I
along on top of t’sack o’carn, on her tail(tail was the stuff skirt of a
working woman’s dress). I wur but a lil chap, and I’d fall asleep fur two
or three mile while her dragged I goin’whoam. It wur night afore us ud get
whoam. Three or four mile it wur t’walkdown to Hook, but her’d be oop afore
it wur light ... Two sacks o’carn she’d reckon to get in havest and it ud
keep us in wheaten bread through hte year.’
‘What did a gallon of the bread cost - was it about one and ten pence?’ I
asked. Yes, one and
eight pence to one and tenpence ‘twas according - That wur afore Jonas Clark
wur farmer there. It wur farmer Stratton wur there then. Robert Leighfield
(pronounced Livell) who lives up at Beech Copse now, he wur a lil chap
then - bout my size - he and his mother lived at
crossroads where you have a red postbox now. She’d make my mother a cupo’
tea sometimes an’ gi it to her when she come by... Yuss, he said at last, my
mother she wur jest about a brave
old soul. She wur eighty-eight when she died; I do believe sh’ve gone to
Heaven, if so be theer be such aplace ... for wummin.`` NOTE: t’sack o’carn = the sack of corn
