From letter to Linda from Aunt Nellie - (Ellen Crombie) (1989)
`(The Brinsdons arrived in New Zealand and) they moved from a farm on the other side of Ashburn Hall to Duncrieff Farm on the top of the hill at the far end of the White Swamp road not very long I think after they arrived. They had a very hard journey in a sailing ship and a number of passengers died on the way (including) anumber of children. My grandmother (Ellen Painter) was also some sort of nurse and used to take my mother (Esther Brinsdon) with her down the bush (to) Frasers Gully sometimes at night to attend confinements (births) in homes.
Notes for Ellen Jane Painter:
Ellen Jane was a midwife, who after being called out to a patient , walked up Fraser`s Gully carrying a lantern, stopping to drink from a spring somewhere near the top.
